Brenda A. Poss came to Emmanuel as Adjunct faculty in 2006 after having taught in Georgia’s public schools for 31 years. She holds Education Specialist (Music), Master of Music Education, and Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of Georgia. At Emmanuel, Ms. Poss teaches Elementary and Secondary Music Teaching Methods and Materials, Choral Methods and Materials, Conducting, Church Music Methods and Materials, Fundamentals of Music, and she conducts the Emmanuel Chorale.
During her teaching career Ms. Poss was the recipient of numerous awards and grants. She studied Mozart in Vienna, Austria, under a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). She also received NEH grants to study the music of the Cherokee on their reservation in Tallequah, Oklahoma, and to study the music of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s in Birmingham, Alabama. She was twice an exchange teacher to Germany (Wolfenbuttel and Dresden). In 1999, Ms. Poss was a finalist for Georgia Teacher or the Year. She is in frequent demand as a piano accompanist and is Music Director at Central Presbyterian Church in Athens.
