Based on the children’s book written by Frances Hodgson Burnett about 100 years ago, The Secret Garden tells the story of the lonely life of Mary Lennox, played by Hannah Smith. Mary has just lost her parents in a tragic cholera epidemic in British India. She is sent to live far away from everything she knows in a house haunted by past tragedies. Lord Craven, played by Samuel Morris, is her uncle, and Dr. Neville Craven, played by Josh Bryan, is his brother. Running the manor house leaves little time for Mary, and Lord Craven is also consumed with the death of his wife Lily, played by Chloe Payne.
“Though it is never explicitly suggested, there are hints that the magic similar in nature to the magic of the Narnia Chronicles or similar series,” says Mrs. Stephanie Garrett, director of the production and English faculty at Emmanuel College. “It is based in the love the characters learn to have for one another and their appreciation for the beauty of creation.”
