5th Graders Learn College Lessons Comer Students Create Digital Stories
(FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.)--L. J. Gay and Paula Dixon from Emmanuel College enjoyed helping Mrs. Leslie Hardeman's 5th graders learn how to create digital stories last week at Comer Elementary in nearby Madison County.Gay, a senior communication major at EC, says service learning projects like this are a valuable part of the learning process.
"They learned within three hours how to do a digital story, so I wonder how much more kids could learn if there were more volunteers willing to teach kids creative things," Gay says.
Students learned how to use free software that took their digital photos and presented them as a video complete with music and titles. Mrs. Hardeman, Challenge teacher at Comer, says it went well."It's amazing what can be accomplished in just a few hours," she says. "My students were each able to put together a complete digital story and share it with the class. In the computer lab, the creative juices were flowing, and parents were pleased to see what their children had accomplished," she adds.
"I think it's important to help kids learn hands-on technology to enhance their academics along with interaction from young adults who want to work with them," says Gay, who was a communication intern with EC's service learning program called Koinonia.
Their presentation, called Show and Tell for All Ages, is an example of how EC's Communication Department uses service learning to reach beyond the college campus to serve the surrounding communities."It was fun to watch the students editing their photos, creating background music, and showing and telling their own digital stories. We appreciate Mrs. Hardeman inviting us to her class," says Dixon, assistant professor of communication at EC.
