Clubs and Organizations
The Education Club is a recognized student organization within the SOE with faculty advisors from SOE faculty. All teacher candidates are eligible to join, and teacher candidates new to the SOE are recruited by the club for membership. Student officers, elected by the membership, govern the club. The club provides social functions and informative meetings, which supplement the regular activities of the SOE.
Johnston, Patrick
Patrick Johnston, instructor, earned his B.S. in English Education from the University of Alabama and his M.A. in English from the School of Letters program at Sewanee: The University of the South. He joined the Emmanuel College athletic staff as the Director of Lacrosse and Menʼs Lacrosse Head Coach in February 2012. Prior to Emmanuel, Johnston served as the English Department Chair at Cardinal Newman High School and an English instructor at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. His interests include Shakespeare, creative non-fiction, and the art of composition.
Johnston, Cortney
Cortney Johnston, instructor, earned her B.A. in English from the University of Alabama and her M.S. in Secondary English Education from Jacksonville State University. Cortney taught 10th grade and senior english at The Kingʼs Academy, a Christian school and one of the top private schools Palm Beach, for the past five years. She worked as the Critical Thinking coordinator for the English department as well as helped map and develop the writing curriculum for the newly revised English department. Cortney enjoys reading British and American literature, historical fiction, and mythology.
AA in General Education
PURPOSE
As a Christian liberal arts college, Emmanuel provides educational opportunities that go beyond job training in marketable skills for employment. Studying liberal arts is not synonymous with career preparation. The general education program is designed to help the person develop as a holistic individual in society. In that a liberal arts education seeks to help the student make a life rather than merely a living, and that career goals often change, the general education program is highly valuable for career preparation, and for further work toward a baccalaureate degree.

*Students who are following curricula which place emphasis on mathematics and science may request at the beginning of the sophomore year to be permitted to make the following substitutions:
A student with a total of 20 hours of math/science (this is 12 hours above the 3-hour math and 4-hour science requirement) may substitute 3 hours of math/science courses for one of the options under humanities or social science. A student with a total of 23 or more hours of math/science (15 or more hours above requirements) may substitute for one option under both humanities and social science. A student may not substitute for two humanities or two social science courses under this provision.
Emmanuel Named to President's Honor Roll for Second Year
Emmanuel College is one of only nine colleges in Georgia named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service 2012 Honor Roll.
Emmanuel students volunteered 61,162 hours during the 2011-12 academic year, and this is the second consecutive year Emmanuel receives this honor.

Dr. Sherry Story's Story
Dr. Sherry Story, an Associate Professor in the Natural Sciences Department at Emmanuel College, opened up to some of our communication students recently about the painful abuse she lived through as a child. The students share her testimony of healing through the powerful video project they created in their CM304 Video Production 1 class.
