Emmanuel College will host a Georgia Department of Education Fitness Assessment Training workshop for Physical Education teachers and paraprofessionals from the Hart County and Franklin County School Systems Monday, September 12, 2011, from 8 am to 4 pm in the EC Gymnasium. This mandatory training is in response to a law (H.B. 225) called the SHAPE Act that was signed by Governor Sonny Perdue in June, 2009, which states that “ All students in a physical education class in grades 3-12 in the public schools of Georgia must have an annual physical fitness assessment by a qualified physical education teacher. ” After the signing of the Bill, the Department of Education developed a statewide Fitness Assessment Committee and established the protocol for training physical education teachers throughout the state and collecting the data through the FitnessGram to be sent to the Department of Education and the Governor’s office. Dr. Bud Reiselt, Chair of the Emmanuel College Department of Kinesiology, will be the contact person for the workshop. Dr. Reiselt is a member of the statewide Fitness Assessment Committee and before coming to Emmanuel in 2010, was the Program Specialist for Health and Physical Education at the Department of Education and was instrumental in working with legislatures and the Governor’s office in passing the SHAPE Act.
