Emmanuel College is pleased to announce Hello, Dolly! as this year’s spring musical on April 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the John W. Swails Center on campus.
In this very silly musical, Dolly Levi is a nosey, bossy matchmaker who wants to marry a rich man, she claims only for his money, even as she sets up other couples in the midst of the story.
Mrs. Stephanie Garrett, director, describes the play as having the feel of a modern day romantic comedy.
This production also includes more dancing compared to previous productions at EC.
“When we think about what we want to perform, we consider several important things,” Garrett says. “One of those is what challenges us, and Hello Dolly! has a lot of dancing, something we normally don’t have in our productions.”
Not only that, but Garrett also faced another challenge in casting a young lady to play Dolly Levi, a most difficult musical theater role, especially for a young woman.
“It was hard,” she says. “Any of the ladies who auditioned for Dolly could’ve played her very well and would have given us a different Dolly.”
That lead role will be played by Chloe Payne, a senior majoring in vocal performance at Emmanuel and a 2009 graduate of Franklin County High School.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for faculty and staff, and $1 for Emmanuel students with college ID.
