Emmanuel College students presented digital stories to Comer Elementary School in Madison County in late April as part of a service learning project at Emmanuel to help children enjoy learning academic standards through video storybooks called digital stories.

This was a collaboration between Mrs. Amy Hancock's education course called EM310 Reading and Writing in the Content Areas and Mrs. Paula Dixon's communication course called CM316 Multimedia Communication.

"Service learning is a great strategy to use with students of all ages," says Dr. Vicki Hollinshead, Dean of the School of Education at Emmanuel. "It empowers students by showing them how they can make a positive difference by meeting a real need in their community while at the same time being actively engaged in the learning process."

The seven stories were written and created by 7 education students and 14 communication students, and Comer's media specialist, Patricia Carey, arranged the presentation. Those visiting at Comer were (from left, back row) Mrs. Amy Hancock (education faculty), Holly Roberts, Desiree Wilson, Will Ward, James Malcolm, Jana Mobley and Mrs. Paula Dixon (communication faculty).
