Budgeting for Books
Reading is an essential component to a successful class experience at college. Thus, in addition to tuition, room and board, you as an incoming student should be ready to purchase any number of textbooks for your classes, and thus should include these items as part of your school budget. Depending on your major, you may expect to purchase on average $300-400 of books per semester. However, some majors require texts that can be quite expensive—the Sciences and Business Administration are examples—and thus you can expect to spend $200-300 more per semester in some cases.
Emmanuel does have an on-campus bookstore open the first few weeks of classes to purchase any number of textbooks, with an option to sell back some (not all) books at the end of the semester. You may opt, however, to purchase books online through an online rental site or a site where you can purchase and keep the books.
Some words of caution for online buyers:
- If you purchase books online, you should make sure that you buy books in a timely manner so that you will have them by the first day of class. Once you register for classes, the textbook information will be available through your printed class schedule. You should make sure that the edition ordered online matches with the text edition on your class schedule.
- It is possible (but happens rarely) that texts initially in the system may change by the first day of class. If that is the case, it is your responsibility to make sure that any text you order online can be returned if it is not the right textbook.
Preparing for Math at Emmanuel
Math Placement: As you know, taking at least one math class is a requirement of every student at most any college. For some majors (especially in the sciences), taking more than one math class will be required. As math sometimes proves difficult for students, we want you to know that we stand ready to help you succeed.
If you scored a 490 or above on your Math SAT (ACT equivalent: 21 or above), then you automatically qualify to be placed in any one of the following general education courses: MA122 (Mathematical Ideas), MA124I (College Algebra Intensive), MA200 (Statistics), and MA210 (Principles of Mathematics). If you scored below a 490 on your SAT, then you will be required to take a test (during your registration period) to ensure proper placement in the right math class for you. For some, depending on your placement score, this may necessitate you take one of our developmental math classes prior to the class(es) you will need in your program of study.
A word of caution: Even if you automatically qualify for one of the regular classes above, if you know you struggle in math, you may consider taking the placement exam anyway to see where exactly you should be placed. The choice is yours.
Challenge Exam Option: If you have scored above a 490 on the Math SAT, and you feel that you can qualify for a higher math class than what is listed above (MA211—Math for Early Childhood, MA124—Regular College Algebra, MA125—Trigonometry, or MA175—Pre-Calculus), you may take the same placement test (during your registration period) as a challenge exam to place in one of those classes.
Math Placement Test Preparation: Anyone needing or wanting to take the Math Placement Test should consider purchasing and studying SAT Math Preparation published guides (available through bookstores or online websites) prior to your registration day.
A detailed description of and study topics for the Math Placement Exam at Emmanuel College can be found here.
