In 1968, James Rix was the first African American student to sign an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Emmanuel College. Today, with the help of his coach, Lloyd Turlington, and teammates during the school’s junior college era, James looks to give back to the school that gave him a chance through the Turlington-Rix Foundation.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to an individual who is interested in attending Emmanuel College and is a descendent of a former player or a member of the player’s family. If this is not possible, we will offer the scholarship to another student that meets the scholarship criteria.
This scholarship fund was created to not only help a student-athlete experience Emmanuel but serve as a thank you to the college that prepared James and countless others for success.
James believes this scholarship fund will also help raise awareness for the history of the college.
“There is no better school than Emmanuel College,” James said. “Fifty years ago, I was blessed to be given a scholarship to attend and this place has been a great part of my life.”
James, Coach Turlington, co-chair, Greg Morris (’73), and several others are spearheading this initiative and hope that you will join them in making the Turlington-Rix Foundation a part of a significant ara in Emmanuel College history!
